Cat Spraying: A Medical Or Behavioral Problem?

by Paul Proctor

Cat spraying is a very common pet behavior problem which can upset many households. In some cases however, this type of behavior can be a result of medical problems. If you are concerned about the sudden onset of this behavior, especially in addition to any other unusual symptoms you may have observed in your pet, you should consult a veterinarian.

One of the major problems that owners of male cats face is spraying. One way to combat the problem is to have your cat neutered. This should stop most male cats from spraying, especially in the home, but the costs associated with neutering prevent some owners from being able to "fix" their cats.

Some cat owners feel that the actual action of neutering a cat is inhumane and feel that they should not ever subject their pets to such cruel treatment. For people that feel that hurting their cats and preventing them from breeding and have additional cute little teeny baby kittens there are other options that they may be able to utilize in lieu of having their little baby kittens neutered.

On the other hand, some people feel that they have some particular issues which would create a serious problem if they neutered their male cats. For example, some pet owners who have kittens also have the intention of breeding their kittens once they have grown into cats.

This also holds true for people that are going to use their cats to breed with another person's female cats. It is in these circumstances that you must consider behavioral modifications.

The best way to keep a cat from spraying all over the house is to neuter it. But if there are reasons you can't have your cat neutered, you'll have to find some other way to keep it from spraying. Spraying can result in odor and nasty-looking stains all over everything, and it becomes a big problem when the cat is continually spraying furniture, clothes, and carpets.

Common cat spraying problems step from a cat not being neutered. It also might be the cause of a medical condition, so if a cat is spraying, the owner should seek a vet's advice. Cat problems such as spraying may be cured with the right medicine or medical procedure. Many owner's don't want to have their cats neutered because they intend on breeding. This should be discussed with a vet, as spraying can cause furniture, rugs and more to be stained and to smell. Above all, the cats health should be considered.
