Cosmetic Acupuncture: A Beauty Secret

by Robert Harrison

With all the reported risks of plastic surgery, it is no wonder that women are seeking out other options. Plastic surgery requires anesthesia, usually takes several hours, and leaves the patient with a swollen, red, and sometimes bruised face. It takes around two weeks for complete recovery.

Cosmetic acupuncture, on the other hand, is completely safe and has no risks or side effects aside from the possibility of slight bruising. Don't expect an actual "facelift"; the benefits of facial cosmetic acupuncture are not magical and will not be noticed overnight. Rather than cutting the skin or using harsh chemical peels, cosmetic acupuncture provides more subtle results that are noticed over time.

A practitioner will insert tiny, thin needles into wrinkles and frown lines. The needles stimulate energy to flow around the face; blood rushes to the surface, and the muscles relax. The muscles then tighten, which decreases sagging of facial skin. The needles also stimulate the cells to create new collagen fibers under wrinkles, filling in fine lines. A recent study by the International Journal of Clinical acupuncture claims that 90% of those who tried facial acupuncture saw positive results such as softening of facial lines, improvement in skin tone, reduction of under-eye circles, and a general facial rejuvenation.

The amount charged and number of treatments depends upon the practitioner, they aren't fixed. If you decide to go to a practitioner, be careful to see that the practitioner has a license and has been trained by a qualified teacher. In addition, he should also be a member of the American cosmetic acupuncture association.

Also, another benefit exclusive to acupuncture: while patients are seeking treatment for cosmetic concerns, acupuncture has a positive effect on the person as a whole. Traditional Chinese medicine has been used for stress, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and a whole list of other modern complaints. Although many are skeptical about the effectiveness of facial acupuncture, it is not hard to imagine that when one's general well-being improves, the appearance of one's skin will improve also.

While skeptics are quick to point out that the results are short-lived, lasting only around 3-5 years, keep in mind that the average facelift is far from permanent. Several years down the road, the effects of aging will once again begin to show on the face, no matter how many procedures someone goes through to halt the aging process.

A newer and much safer way to reach desirable cosmetic results has come about. Cosmetic acupuncture does not enlist the side effects of going under the knife. Similar to traditional Chinese medicine, a practitioner places very small needles into age lines on the face. The purpose of the needles is to get energy flowing in these areas. As blood rushes to the surface, the muscles tighten which firms the skin. The International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture reports that 90% of trial participants of facial acupuncture noted results like softening of facial lines, better skin tone, lessened blue circles under the eyes, and an overall facial rejuvenation effect.
