Pet Food Shopping and Preparation: Learn What Your Dogs Need

by Melinda Smith

Pet food should not be seen as just anything edible that you can feed your pets. Animals, like humans, need proper care and nutrition in order to be healthy and fit. Being our "best friend", we should be sensitive and careful on what we feed them because we could be giving food that's harmless for their health. Their soft coats that we love to snuggle into can be attained when they have sufficient vitamins and minerals - same with good teeth, bones, skin and their overall health. Most importantly, these will strengthen your dog's immune system to ward off bacteria, parasites and other viruses.

Aside from vitamins and minerals, the essential parts in a dog's diet include protein, carbohydrates, fiber and fatty acids. Protein, which dogs get a lot of from whole meat, fish and eggs, is necessary to build strong muscles, develop their growth and build a healthy coat, nails and skin. Fat transports vitamins in our pet's system, boost metabolism and is a known source of energy. Another primary source of energy is carbohydrates, which our dogs get from pet food such as raw meat, fruits and vegetables.

On the other hand, it is also important to know what foods are bad for your dog. Feeding them the wrong foods can lead them to health disorders like obesity, cancer, arthritis, bowel disorder, diabetes and kidney problems, to name a few. Some of the big no-no's to feed them include cooked chicken bones, chocolates, garlic, onion, beans and excessive amounts of protein. That's why some owners resort to homemade dog food which they concoct themselves.

Aside from being able to monitor your dog's food intake, homemade dog food is also beneficial to your budget. It takes time and research in educating yourself how to make a delicious homemade treat for your dogs but it pays off seeing your buddies all healthy and energetic. As long as you keep in mind not to add preservatives and added spices to their meals, you are free to mix and match their food and add variety.Feel free to also include cooked good grain in their bowls, like brown rice and whole wheat, to complete their protein meat and vegetable meal. The difference between the generic dog food and the premium dog food is that latter normally uses high quality ingredients - hence, it is also more expensive. It has no added fillers and by-products and, although more expensive than the regular kind, offers variety in shape, color and taste.

However, it is still safer to discuss with your dog's veterinarian what your dog's diet should be.

To learn about pet food needs, you should start by meeting your dog's veterinarian to discuss with him/her your pet's needs. Whether you plan to buy the right kind of pet food or to make your dog's foods yourself, it is best to mix good research and professional guidance. But remember that each dog's needs vary depending on their breed, age, sizes and their level of activity. You should also remember to slowly, and day by day, change your dog's food if he has gone accustomed to a certain, unhealthy diet. After all, dogs are like humans, too - they don't take diet changes easily.

Pet food and snacks should not only tame your pup's hunger, it must also meet their body's nutritional needs. Many owners rely on premium dog food to deliver these to their dog, while some make homemade dog food as a way to ensure and monitor their dog's health. Giving your dogs foods that provide sufficient vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein and fat will keep them strong, healthy and happy.
