How To Invest In Stocks Like A Pro

by Mark Crisp

With the stock market in record territory, there's no shortage of books and websites offering investing for beginners seminars through websites and infomercials that promise quick profits through easy-to-learn systems. But learning how to invest in stocks is an education experience where the only teacher is the market, and the learning process can take years.

To learn investing, one has to learn to spot trends. Every bull market has its winning sectors and every sector has its winning stocks. These stocks tend to outperform not only their peers, but the market as a whole. Taking a position in these high performers at the right time - before they make a large move to the upside - is key to knowing how to invest in stocks.

Increasing oil prices do not affect every company in the energy sector in exactly the same way. Some stocks will move ahead more strongly than the sector, most will be more or less in line with the sector average, and a few will perform more poorly than the sector as a whole. The key to successful investing is picking hot stocks in hot sectors. This isn't as easy as it sounds, however; there is a lot of research and a bit of luck required to find these big winners that you'll want to buy.

It often takes some time to see a considerable profit in investments; it can range from several weeks to months. So one must be patient enough. Active investors have the strategy to get into a core position and trade it actively. However, some other investors look out for a right time to buy and then wait for the investment to hit a particular price before they sell it or until they find another nice investment to get into. Definitely, not all positions can be profitable, so the true strategy would be to be flexible enough to get rid of losers too.

There are many ways to make or lose money in the stock market. Obviously, as the old saying goes, buy low and sell high. Timing one's purchase and sale is very important. One must have a strategy on when to buy and in what situation you might sell. Timing market trends allows one to make money even when the underlying stock is a relative dog. That's because quality research and timing allows you to make a profit quickly. Sometimes even the best purchases happen to go down, but this becomes a buying opportunity. If you believe in the stock, buy a little more, and the compounding of shares allows more profit when the price increases.

There are seemingly endless sources of information about hot stocks and hot sectors, in the present and the near future. To know how to invest in stocks, one must be able to sift through all the noise to find winners. This will require research, patience, discipline, and luck, but it can be done by any intelligent person with an inquiring mind.
